In Life Support the candidates are assessed on an adult size dummy - as well as simple first aid, choking, shock. You do not have to have any water-work to pass this award.

 

Basic Outline

- Assessment 1 - Dangers, Response, Airway and Breathing, recovery position and action for vomit.

- Assessment 2 - Adult CPR - including rescue breaths and chest compressions (CPR)

- Assessment 3 - Theory. Treatment of Bleeding, Shock, Choking, Difference in life support for different age groups

- Assessment 4 - (Optional) To demonstrate basic First Aid bandages.

 

Pre-requisites  - None

 

Other Details

This course is only run as a stand alone course subject to demand. The course is typically included in other awards, usually as a pre-requisite.

Times and Costs 

Approx 4 hours of tuition.

Assessment fee of £8.

Handbook costs £10 - but can be shared

Life Support 3

 

With Life Support 3 the candidates are assessed on 3 different size dummies - otherwise as Life Support 1 above.

 

Basic outline

- Assessment 1 - As Life Support assessment 1 above.

- Assessment 2 - As Life Support assessment 2 above.

- Assessment 3 - (usually added to Section 2) - use of face mask with second rescuer.

- Assessment 4 - As Life Support assessment 2 above but CPR on an infant casualty

- Assessment 5 - As Life Support assessment 2 above but CPR on a child casualty

- Assessment 6 - Demonstrate treatment in an unknown situation, of 2 casualties.

- Assessment 7 - As Life Support assessment  3 above but with hypothermia and drowning included.

- Assessment 8 - (Optional) Demonstrate basic first aid knowledge for bleeding and shock.

 

Times and Costs 

Approx 5 hours of tuition.

Assessment fee of £10

Handbook costs £10 - but can be shared (same handbook as above)

AED
 
Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Minimum age of 16 years.

AED is not included in the Life Support Programme but we sometimes demonstrate it as part of a Life Support award so that the candidates have an idea what they might be required to do on the arrival of an ambulance or Paramedic.  It is taught and assessed as an optional "bolt-on" item for the NPLQ award OR it can be taught and assessed as a stand alone course.

Approx 5 hours of tuition.
